Shocking a pool is one of the most useful things you can do for it, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The dose, the time of day, and the filtering afterward matter as much as the product you reach for.
What shocking actually does
Shocking means raising the chlorine well above its normal level for a short time, high enough to do jobs a steady maintenance level can’t. That spike breaks apart the spent, combined chlorine that dulls water and stings eyes, kills an algae bloom outright, and burns off the contaminants a busy weekend leaves behind. Getting the dose right
The single biggest mistake is under-dosing. A shock has to push chlorine past what’s called breakpoint, the level where it actually destroys combined chlorine rather than adding to it, and falling short can leave the water worse than before. That means knowing your pool’s volume in gallons and matching the amount to the job, since a light maintenance dose and an algae-clearing dose are very different. A quick water test first tells you what you’re starting from, so you’re treating the actual problem rather than guessing.
Timing it for after dark
When you shock matters almost as much as how much you use. Unstabilized chlorine breaks down fast in sunlight, so a dose added at midday can lose most of its strength within a couple of hours, before it has done anything useful. Adding shock at dusk or after dark gives it the whole night to reach breakpoint and work while the sun isn’t burning it off. It’s the simplest change that turns a disappointing shock into an effective one, and it costs nothing but a little patience.
Filtering is half the job
This is the step people skip. Shock kills and breaks down material, but it doesn’t remove it, and that’s the filter’s job. Run the pump continuously after shocking, not on a short timer, so the water keeps moving and the filter keeps pulling out what the chlorine killed. A perfect dose at the perfect time still leaves cloudy water if the filter isn’t given the hours to clear it.
Handling it safely
Shock is a strong chemical and deserves a little respect. Pre-dissolving certain types in a bucket of pool water before pouring them in helps avoid bleaching a vinyl liner or spotting plaster. Waiting to swim
Fresh shock leaves chlorine too high to swim in comfortably or safely, so the rule is to test rather than watch the clock. Wait until free chlorine drops back into the normal range, often around a day later, and confirm it with a test before anyone gets in. Running the pump helps bring the level down faster. Do I shock a saltwater pool the same way?
A salt pool still needs shocking now and then, because the generator produces steady chlorine but not the big spike that clears algae or chloramines. Most systems have a boost or superchlorinate setting, or you can add shock manually just like any other pool. Keeping the cell clean matters too, because a scaled cell quietly underproduces and leaves the water short on sanitizer exactly when it needs the spike most.
Why didn't shocking clear my pool?
