The three kinds, and why it matters
People say algae like it’s one thing. It isn’t, and the differences change the treatment.
Green algae is the common one, the free-floating kind that turns the whole pool. It’s also the most treatable. It responds to a proper shock and thorough filtering, and a pool with green algae usually comes back quickly.
Yellow or mustard algae is the frustrating one. It clings to shaded walls and steps, often looks like a patch of sand or dirt, and brushes away only to return in the same spot days later. It’s far more chlorine-resistant than green, and treating it like green algae is why people fight it for months. It also lives on toys, floats, and brushes, which is how it keeps coming back after you thought you won.
Black algae is the serious one. It roots into plaster, protects itself with a tough outer layer, and shrugs off normal chlorine levels entirely. It needs aggressive brushing to break that layer before any treatment can reach it, and it takes persistence.
How we treat it
Identify what we are dealing with. Green, mustard, and black need genuinely different approaches, and guessing wastes weeks.
Fix the circulation first. If the pump or filter is not doing its job, no chemical treatment will hold.
Brush thoroughly. Especially for black and mustard, where the treatment cannot reach the algae until the surface is broken up.
Shock at the right strength. Under-dosing is the most common failure. It feeds the algae rather than killing it.
Apply the appropriate algaecide for the type, since these are not interchangeable.
Filter it out and rebalance. Dead algae has to be removed from the water, and the chemistry has to be brought back into a state that holds.
Why algae keeps coming back
Recurring algae is almost always one of a small number of things, and none of them are bad luck.
Something mechanical is failing. A weak pump, a clogged filter, or a scaled salt cell that stopped producing chlorine. This is the most common one by a distance.
The stabilizer is locked up. Too much cyanuric acid means your chlorine reading looks fine while the chlorine can’t actually do anything. People fight algae for a whole summer with a pool full of useless chlorine.
It’s mustard algae, and it’s being treated as green. It comes back in the same shaded spot every time because it was never fully killed.
Dead spots in circulation. Corners and steps that water doesn’t really reach are where algae establishes first.
Preventing it
Algae needs an absence of chlorine, and chlorine goes absent for reasons. Consistent weekly service means someone is watching the chemistry and the equipment before either one fails. That’s genuinely the whole prevention strategy.
Why algae blooms fast here
Central Texas is close to an ideal environment for algae, and understanding why makes the prevention obvious.
Algae needs warmth, sunlight, and an absence of chlorine. Our pools have warmth and sunlight for most of the year, which means chlorine is the only thing holding the line, and it’s holding it in the worst possible conditions.
Heat burns chlorine off faster. Sun destroys unstabilized chlorine within hours. Heavy summer use adds organic load that consumes chlorine faster still. A pool here can go from adequately chlorinated to defenseless in a matter of days if something stops working.
Which is why algae blooms here are usually sudden rather than gradual. The pool looks fine, then a pump falters or a salt cell quits during a hot week, and by the weekend it’s green. It isn’t that the pool degraded slowly. It’s that the one defence it had disappeared, in conditions where algae grows extremely quickly.

What is the difference between green algae and mustard algae?
Green algae is suspended in the water, turns the whole pool at once, and treats relatively easily with a proper shock. Mustard algae behaves completely differently: it clings to shaded walls in patches that look like dirt or sand, tolerates normal chlorine levels far better, and reliably returns to the same spot. Treating mustard as though it were green is precisely why people fight the same patch for months without ever winning.
Why does my algae keep coming back?
Two reasons, and the second one fools people. The first is a chemistry lock: stabilizer has built up so high that your chlorine reading looks perfectly healthy while the chlorine itself is unable to do anything, so you treat, it clears, and it returns. The second is a living reservoir, since mustard and black algae survive in filter media, on brushes, and in pool toys, then reseed the same spot days after treatment.
Can I get rid of algae myself?
It depends almost entirely on which species you have, not on how hard you work at it. Green algae, yes, often, if you shock at genuinely the right strength and filter thoroughly afterward. Mustard and black are a different proposition, because they tolerate chlorine levels that would kill green outright, so more effort with the same approach gets you nowhere. Correct identification matters far more here than persistence does.
What is black algae and why is it so hard to kill?
Black algae roots down into the plaster itself and grows a waxy protective layer over the top that ordinary chlorine simply cannot penetrate. That’s what makes it different from every other kind. The layer has to be physically broken open with aggressive brushing, often with a steel brush on plaster, before any treatment can reach the organism underneath. It takes real persistence over several rounds, and it regrows from the roots if you stop early.
Is algae in a pool dangerous?
The algae itself is mostly not what harms you. Its real significance is as a signal: algae growing at all means your sanitizer has stopped working, and whatever conditions let algae establish will let bacteria establish too. There’s also a straightforward physical hazard people overlook: algae-coated steps and walls become genuinely slippery underfoot, and that catches swimmers out on entry and exit.
Will shocking the pool get rid of algae?
For green algae, usually yes. For mustard and black, shocking alone won’t finish the job no matter how heavy the dose, and that’s the distinction that matters. Mustard needs the surfaces worked over and often a different chemical alongside the shock. Black needs its protective layer physically broken first, or the shock never contacts the organism. Reaching for a bigger dose instead of the right method is where most treatments stall.
How is algae treatment different from green pool recovery?
It’s a question of scope. Algae treatment addresses a specific algae problem in a pool that is otherwise working, where the equipment runs, the water circulates, and you can still see the bottom. Green pool recovery is the larger intervention for a pool that has gone fully over, where the water needs clearing in stages across several visits before it’s swimmable.
