How we recover a green pool
The process is straightforward, but the order matters.
Assess the water and the equipment. We test the chemistry and check whether the pump, filter, and circulation are actually working. If they aren’t, nothing else will hold.
Clear the debris. Leaves and organic matter on the bottom keep feeding the algae, so they come out first.
Treat the algae. A proper shock and algaecide treatment at the strength the pool actually needs, based on its size and how far it’s gone.
Run and filter. This is the part people skip. Dead algae has to be filtered out, and that means running the system and cleaning or backwashing the filter repeatedly as it loads up.
Rebalance the water. pH, alkalinity, chlorine, and stabilizer brought back into range so the pool holds.

Can you do it yourself?
Honestly, sometimes. A lightly green pool, caught in the first few days, is often within reach of a homeowner who’s willing to shock it properly and run the filter hard for a couple of days. If that’s your situation, you may not need us at all, and we’d rather say so.
Where DIY recoveries stall is the two parts that aren’t obvious. First, dosing: under-shocking is worse than not shocking, because you feed the algae without killing it, and the dose depends on your gallons and how far gone the pool is. Second, filtering: dead algae turns the water cloudy grey, and it still has to come out through the filter, which means running the system continuously and cleaning the filter as it clogs. Skip that, and the pool is green again within a week.
And if the pool went green because equipment failed, no amount of chemistry will hold. That’s the case where doing it yourself just delays the real fix.

Draining is a last resort we only reach for when a pool has been abandoned long enough that the water is genuinely beyond treating, or the plaster underneath needs attention. How long does it take to clear a green pool?
Usually a few days rather than a few hours.
