What we measure, and why each one matters

Why Central Texas water is difficult

Pool chemistry here is harder than the manuals assume, for reasons specific to this region.

The fill water is hard. Whatever you put in the pool arrives carrying calcium, so hardness climbs over time simply through topping off, and evaporation concentrates it further through a long hot summer. Your pool is slowly getting harder every time you top it up, and nothing you add will reverse that.

The sun is relentless. Unstabilized chlorine can be largely gone within hours of a summer afternoon, which is why stabilizer matters so much here and why people who ignore it fight a losing battle.

And the season is long. No winter shutdown gives the water a rest, so a slow drift compounds across most of the year.

The mistakes we see most

Chasing pH without fixing alkalinity. If alkalinity is out of range, pH will not hold, no matter how much acid you add. People do this for months.

Adding stabilizer repeatedly. Stabilizer doesn’t burn off. It accumulates. Adding it every time you add chlorine eventually locks up your sanitizer entirely, and the only real fix is diluting the pool.

Trusting test strips for everything. They’re fine for a rough check. They’re not adequate for diagnosing a problem, and a lot of people are making decisions on bad data.

Shocking a pool that has a mechanical problem. If the pump or filter isn’t doing its job, chemicals are a band-aid on a broken system.

Testing on a plan

Testing once tells you where the water is. Testing regularly tells you where it’s going, and that’s the difference between managing a pool and reacting to it.

The order matters more than the chemicals

Here is the thing almost nobody tells pool owners: adjusting water chemistry in the wrong order will waste your afternoon and your money, even if every individual thing you do is correct.

Alkalinity comes first, because it controls how stable pH will be. Adjust pH before alkalinity, and you will watch your pH drift straight back where it started, and you will do it again next week, and you will conclude that pools are impossible.

Then pH, which governs whether your chlorine can actually work. Then sanitizer, once the water is in a state where sanitizer can do its job. Calcium and stabilizer are slower-moving and get corrected on a longer horizon, since neither leaves the water on its own.

This is the single most common reason people give up on managing their own pool. Not that the chemistry is hard, but that doing the right things in the wrong sequence produces results that look like failure. If you understand the order, a lot of the frustration disappears.

How often should pool water be tested?

Weekly through the swim season, which in Central Texas is most of the year. Chemistry moves quickly in this heat, and a week is about as long as a small drift can go before it turns into a real problem you have to correct rather than nudge. It’s also worth an extra test after heavy rain, which dilutes and shifts everything, or after a weekend where the pool saw unusually heavy use.

There are two usual suspects, and the frustrating part is that neither shows up if you’re only testing the chlorine itself. Either your pH has climbed too high, which sharply reduces how effective that chlorine actually is, or your stabilizer has accumulated to the point where it locks the chlorine up and stops it from working. Both are extremely common here, which is exactly why we test the full panel rather than one number.

Cyanuric acid is a stabilizer, and it shields chlorine from being destroyed by ultraviolet light. Under the Texas sun, unstabilized chlorine burns off remarkably fast, so you genuinely need some. The catch is that stabilizer accumulates and doesn’t evaporate or break down on its own, so it only climbs. Too much of it locks the chlorine up and renders it ineffective. Getting that level right is a real balancing act, not a set-and-forget.

For a rough weekly check that nothing has changed dramatically, strips are perfectly fine and better than not testing at all. For diagnosing an actual problem, they aren’t precise enough, and the trouble is that people make genuinely expensive decisions from a color they misjudged by one shade. When the water is misbehaving, and you’re about to spend money correcting it, you want better data than a strip can give you.

Almost always because total alkalinity is out of range, and this is the single most common thing we see people chase in circles. Alkalinity is the buffer that holds pH steady, so when it’s wrong, pH simply will not stay put no matter how much acid you add. You end up correcting the same reading week after week. Fix the alkalinity first, and pH usually settles on its own.

That’s calcium scale from our hard Central Texas water, and it’s worth reading as an early warning rather than a cosmetic annoyance. The tile line is simply where you can see the process happening. The same conditions that deposit calcium there – high hardness combined with high pH- are depositing it inside your heater and salt cell where you can’t see it. Crust on the tile means it’s time to correct the balance.

Plenty of people do, and unlike some pool jobs, this one is genuinely learnable. Two things trip owners up. The first is testing accurately enough to make good decisions from the numbers. The second, and the bigger one, is the order of adjustments, since alkalinity has to be right before pH will hold, and pH has to be right before chlorine works properly.
